The Italian Lady

When I was serving in the U.S. Navy in the 1970s, I had the unique opportunity of being home-ported in Naples, Italy.  It was a fascinating town, and I learned about the simple life that the Italians enjoyed.  They loved their evening strolls in the plazas and streets, and so did I.

While I was at the Naples USO one night, I met a beautiful dark haired lady whom I will call Maria although her real name was otherwise.  We were immediately attracted to each other and met often at the USO.  Later, we went to other places together although she said she just wanted to be a Platonic lover.  I learned that I could have a good time just being around a beautiful woman even if I could not own her.

The days of Italy are now long gone, but I will always remember the walks we had along the Naples bay and a trip to Capri.  She was my guide in Italy and kept me out of trouble along with being a good friend.  I will always be grateful that I knew her for a while.
